Professor to travel to Costa Rica

Gregory Liano of Howell, an associate professor and assistant chair of the Math Department at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, has been accepted into the Madison College Capacity Building for Study Abroad Program cohort for 2012.

According to a press release, Liano was selected for participation based on a “clear commitment to renewable energy/sustainable development, and appropriate interest and institutional support in the development of a new study abroad program.”

In Liano’s proposal, students would be required to focus on subject areas related to ecotourism, renewable resources, sustainability or related topics. He proposed to embed a study abroad component to a statistics course, in which students are required to gather data on a particular topic and use it for statistical purposes.

Liano and eight other cohort participants will travel to Mastatal, Costa Rica, Jan. 3-11. They will also participate in a three-day development training program later in March that is based in the United States.

Funding for the program is made possible by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs. The outcome of this participation will be the development of a new faculty-led study abroad program in a science, technology, engineering and mathematics discipline at Brookdale.
