HILLSBOROUGH: Learn ‘green’ landscaping tips at library on Saturday

   Learn easy care and environmentally friendly landscaping techniques on Saturday, starting at noon, at the library.
   There will be three presenters: Clare Liptak on “Native Plants for More Vibrant Landscapes;” Jeremiah Bergstrom on “Rain Gardens to Solve Flooding Issues,” and Judd Mandell on sustainable landscaping.
   • To mark National Physical Fitness Month, instructor Susan Martinez introduces yoga as a form of exercise at 7 p.m. Monday, May 14. She specializes in spiritual counseling and health and wellness.
   On Monday, May 21, at 7 p.m. instructor Mary Glynn introduces kickboxing with its high-energy, high-impact blend of kicks and punches set to upbeat music.
   For both weeks, bring a yoga mat or towel, wear comfortable clothing and bring water.
   • The Hillsborough library will be closed on summer Sundays starting May 13. Sunday hours will begin again in September.
   Due to the township Memorial Day Parade, the library will open at noon on Saturday, May 26, and close at 5 p.m.
   Upcoming programs intended for adults. Registration is required:
   • Monday Morning Moms (for parents/caregivers and children up to 36 months; there will be toys for the children to play with.) — On May 14 at 10 a.m., this topic will be fitness, nutrition and fun. Rachel Simpers, a registered dietitian from the local Shoprite, will attend, along with a personal trainer. Weather permitting, we will visit the playground for some fun.
   On May 21 at 10 a.m. hear about library events planned for the summer and what other activities you can get involved in within your community.
   • Friday night movie — “War Horse,” the Oscar-nominated movie starring Jeremy Irvine and Emily Watson, will be show on May 11 at 7 p.m. It is rated PG-13.
   • Computer programs — The library will sponsor two-part sessions on May 16 and 23. Part one of Introduction to Microsoft Word 2007 will be at 2 p.m. Part one of Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2007, will be at 3:30 p.m.
   Part two will be held Wednesday, May 23.
   Registration is required for all classes. We have a limited number of laptops for patrons to use during the class, so register early if you need to use one. Patrons may also bring their own laptops, or just watch the presentation.
   • Book discussion — Friends of the Library will talk about “Winter Garden” by Kristin Hannah on Tuesday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m. Read the book and join in the discussion.
   • Digital camera workship — In part two of his workshop, New Jersey photographer Walter Choroszewski will help you take the next steps in developing a digital work flow and management plan on your computer. He will demonstrate basic photo-editing techniques using commercial software and offer tips and tricks for emailing and printing photos. Wednesday, May 16, at 7 p.m.
   • Book donations — The Friends of the Hillsborough Library will accept donations on Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the back parking lot near the book drop. Books must be in good condition and in a box no larger than 18-by-24-by-12 inches. Books loose or in bags will not be accepted. Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
   • Container gardening — Learn how to start and maintain a container garden from Suzanne Bergeron, a certified nursery landscape professional with 10 years of experience in the field. Saturday, May 19, at 1:30 p.m.
   • Afternoon movies — “The Vow,” a PG-rated romantic drama starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, will be shown on Tuesday, May 22, at 1:30 p.m. “The Iron Lady,” Meryl Streep’s Oscar-winning portrayal of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, will be shown Thursday, May 24, at 1:30 p.m.
   • College information — Stop by the table in the foyer of the library’s hallway to meet and receive information from a Raritan Valley Community College representative. Wednesday, May 23, from 5-7 p.m.
   Here are programs for youngsters. Registration is required.
   Summer volunteer sign-up has begun. Teens entering grades 8-12 in the fall and who are looking for a way to earn community service hours can pick up an application to volunteer at the library this summer.
  • Special Storytime (ages 2-6) — It’s a special storytime on Splat the Cat on Thursday, May 10 at 10 a.m. (Note to parents: In order to provide a safe environment for the youngest patrons, older siblings will not be allowed into the program.)
   • Music to Move (ages 2-6) — Join Ann Wild for this special Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m. Introduce your child to music and movement in an interactive program. You will need your library barcode number to complete registration.
   • Stories for 4’s, 5’s & 6’s — Help your preschool or kindergarten child enjoy stories together and build language skills. No registration required. On Monday, May 14, at 1 p.m., the topic is bugs. On Monday, May 21, at 1 p.m.the topic is the ocean.
   • Toddler Time (ages 2-3) — Introduce the pleasure of books to your child. Stories on bugs will be read on Tuesday, May 15, at 10 a.m. Music is the topic on Tuesday, May 22, at 10 a.m.
   • Rhyme Time (ages newborn to 2) — Twenty minutes of nursery rhyme fun on Tuesdays, May 15 and 22, at 10:30 a.m.
   • Early Reader Book Club (grades K-2) — At each program we will discuss the book, do some activities and make a craft. Be sure to read the book before attending. Copies will be available at the Children’s Desk. The next program is “Best in Show For Rotten Ralph” by Jack Gantos. Tuesday, May 15, at 4 p.m.
   • Art Adventures (ages 4-6) — Learn about famous artists and take your own masterpiece home. The program on Wednesday, May 16, at 10 a.m. will be on water lilies, so get inspired by Monet. Note: Some projects may be messy, so dress in play clothes.
   • Garden Club crafts (grades 2-5) — Join the members of the Neshanic Garden Club and create a faux T-shirt. Wednesday, May 16, at 4 p.m.
   • Indoor Field Day — During National Health and Fitness Month, test your skills and fitness with some fun games. Thursday, May 17, at 10 a.m. for ages 4-6 and at 4 p.m. for grades K-4.
   • Story and craft: (ages 2-6) — Listen to a story about bunny ears and create a craft to take home. Friday, May 18, at 10 or 11 a.m. and Saturday, May 19, at 10 a.m.
   • Anime Club (grades 8-12) — Hang out with your friends as we watch anime, discuss the latest manga and more! Thursday, May 24, at 5 p.m.
   The last day for this school year’s Homework Help Center for grades 5-8 is Thursday, May 24. It will resume in the fall. The center is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4-6 p.m.; and Tuesday 4-6 and 6:30-8:30 p.m.
