HILLSBOROUGH: 34 precision drill teams to compete Saturday

Winterguard hosts competition at high school

The Hillsborough Band Parents Association will host its 13th annual Winterguard Show in the high school’s main gym Saturday, Feb. 2.
A total of 34 winterguards will compete, starting with middle school guards at 4:30 p.m. and moving up through the classes to conclude with exhibition performances by both Hillsborough guards.
Winterguard is an indoor color guard activity derived from the ensemble associated with the fall marching band. Instead of performing as a visual accent to the band, each winterguard team picks its own music to perform to and uses equipment — including flags, rifles, sabers and props — with dance moves. Teams are judged on talent, precision and creativity.
Spectators can come any time Saturday for a fee of $10. Students and seniors are $7.
The Hillsborough Scholastic A Winterguard’s 2013 show is titled “Rise Above It All.” The production expresses hope and hopes to show that even in the presence of pain and despair, hope will always help you “rise above it all.”
The Hillsborough Scholastic Novice Winterguard’s show is titled “Back to You.” The show presents gravity as the natural force of attraction; as much as one may want to defy the laws, gravity will always prevail.
This year Hillsborough welcomes a new guard director, D.J. Deans, and his staff.
