The New Jersey Repertory Company is currently presenting the world premiere of “Ants” by Romanian playwright Saviana Stanescu, directed by Jeff Zinn.

Starring Michael Samuel Kaplan, Maria Silverman and Carol Todd, “Ants” is the story of Kara and Mia, sisters who emigrate from Eastern Europe to pursue what has become an increasingly elusive American dream. Kara works in a factory to support her brilliant scientist sister, Mia, who is working toward her Ph.D. in biochemistry and is on the brink of a groundbreaking discovery, under the watchful eye of her supervisor, Dr. Kohn, about the world of ants. Life, however, soon gets in the way.

This quirky comedy explores the biochemistry of job loss, motherhood and desire — as well as the personal science of turning worker ants into queens while surviving the world of ants and humans.

Performances will take place on Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m.; Saturdays at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sundays at 2 p.m., through March 10 at New Jersey Repertory Company, 179 Broadway, Long Branch. Tickets are $40 (discounts are available to seniors, students and groups) and can be purchased by calling 732-229-3166 or by visiting www.njrep.org.
