Think back to your days as a student in English class. What do you remember? What did you dread? In today’s world, English is now referred to as Language Arts, and for good reason. At Saint Aloysius School, middle school language arts is truly an art. The students are immersed in language on a daily basis.William Shakespeare is the most well-known poet and playwright that has ever walked the face of the Earth. His writing is filled with adventure, intrigue and suspense. Most students are introduced to “The Bard” upon entering high school. At Saint Aloysius

School, however, Shakespeare is a writer with whom the middle-schoolers are very familiar. Beginning in the sixth grade, the students are introduced to William and his numerous works. By the time the eighth-graders graduate, they have read, discussed, and acted out more than 12 of Shakespeare’s greatest works. This puts the students at an advantage in their high school literature classes. Because the students know the gist of all the stories, they are not side-tracked by the complexity of the Old English language used. Good literature, both classic and modern, is the foundation for the middle school literature program. Students at Saint Aloysius read everything from Poe and O’Henry to modern writers such as Suzanne Collins, author of “The Hunger Games.” Students participate in weekly book discussion groups with their peers, similar to Oprah Winfrey’s book clubs. Shakespeare once penned,“To be or not to be.”At Saint Aloysius School, the students are taught to be the absolute best they can be!
