Jackson’s Winston advances to DIII wrestling championships

Dallas Winston Dallas Winston Jackson Memorial High School graduate and current Delaware Valley College freshman Dallas Winston advanced to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships after finishing third at 174 pounds in the East Regional at Gettysburg College on Feb. 23.

The national championships will be held March 15-16 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena in Cedar Ridge, Iowa.

Winston was seeded fifth in his weight class and opened with a 10-0 major decision over Anthony Clifford of King’s College before falling to fourthseeded Zach Zotollo of The College of New Jersey, 3-1, in the quarterfinals.

Needing four wins in the consolation bracket to reach the NCAA championships, the freshman, who was a state champion last winter for the Jaguars, did just that. He began with a 14-1 major over Luke Pragdatt (Hunter) and followed with an 8-4 decision over Zachary Bass (Stevens). Winston then earned a 4-0 blanking of sixth seed Mike Williams of Ursinus to reach the consolation finals against top seed and third ranked Kevin Dufresne of Centenary. Dufresne had a 10-1 major over Winston just 16 days ago, but this time it was Winston with his arm raised in a 3- 2 triumph that upped his season mark to 22-12.
