PLUMSTED: Sustainability group ready for the holidays

PLUMSTED — The Township’s Sustainable Jersey Program Committee has a bevy of holiday-themed activities underway.
The committee has built a six-foot Frosty the Snowman out of leftover 50 gallon drums. The festively recycled decoration will be placed by the committee right of Main Street between the Subway restaurant and New Egypt Market Place.
According to a committee release, Frost will be lit up with festive lights alongside the Main Street Christmas tree.
The committee is also asking residents to bring in old or broken holiday lights to avoid them ultimately finding their way in a landfill.
To that end, next to Frosty there will be a container for folks to drop off used or broken lights to be recycled for scrap.
According to the release, any money generated from selling scrap will be donated back to the Plumsted Business Merchant’s Association to help offset costs associated with the Main Street holiday lights.
Used or broken lights will be collected from Dec. through Jan. 19.
The committee has also announced a mailbox used to send letters direct to Santa Claus has appeared at 29 Main Street for children of all ages to drop off letters to Santa.
The release also encouraged residents to visit Main Street and surrounding businesses while doing holiday shopping, as buying local means less packaging, less transportation and smaller carbon footprint.
In addition, shopping means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money to beautify our community.
More independent businesses mean more diversity, more choices and a truly unique community.
