The Plumsted Youth for Nature and the Environment has invited the community to participate in its second annual tree recycling program to help rebuild sand dunes of Bradley Beach.
PLUMSTED — The Plumsted Youth for Nature and the Environment has invited the community to participate in its second annual tree recycling program to help rebuild sand dunes of Bradley Beach.
According to an organization release, old Christmas trees are being recycled as part of coastal dune restoration and protection, as dunes are the first line of defense against beach erosion and coastal storms like Hurricane Sandy.
By recycling used Christmas trees along the sand dunes the branches of the trees bind the sand together, helping to prevent beach and dune erosion, according to the release.
As the trees decompose, nutrients are provided for the dune grasses as well. Since the trees decompose, they must be replaced yearly.
Anyone who would like to recycle their Christmas tree, are asked to bring it to the Plumsted Township Maintenance Building parking lot, located at the end of Pine Street (off of Magnolia Avenue) in New Egypt, on Jan. 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Jan. 5 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Jan. 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Jan. 12 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Volunteers will be on hand to help unload your tree.
Participants are asked to remove all tinsel, lights, ornaments and other adornments from trees.

The organization is also offering local curbside pickup for those who cannot deliver their tree to Pine Street.
