Even if she were not the valedictorian of South Hunterdon Regional High School’s Class of 2014, Julia Maier would have to be considered an altogether impressive and versatile young lady.
"Julia’s very involved with our school’s Key Club, which is a community service organization," said SHRHS guidance counselor Susan Laird. "She’s on the varsity softball team and is a trumpet player in the marching band and jazz band."
She’s also a talented writer.
"During her junior year, Julia’s 10-minute play ‘On the Edge’ won a McCarter Theater playwriting contest," Ms. Laird said. "The play was performed at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School."
Julia was one of 250 high school valedictorians from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware who gathered at Drexel University last weekend, where ABC-6 filmed a 30-minute segment, "Best of the Class 2014."
"It was a really nice event," Julia said Monday. "All the valedictorians there got to meet one another. There were games and presentations from Drexel. There were a lot of reporters there. They were interested in the play I wrote and asked me about it. The play recounts an intense kind of conversation between a couple."
Julia will attend the University of Maryland this fall, planning to major in English.
Career plans?
"I’m not really sure yet," she said. "I’m thinking of trying to go into publishing. I definitely do want to keep writing, though. As far as being strictly a professional writer, I don’t know . . . that can be hard to do. But I do plan to keep writing and to keep trying to get better at it."
