Nurse-midwife, Rutgers professor receives honor

EDISON — Township resident and Rutgers professor Elaine Diegmann has been honored with the 2014 Humanism in Healthcare Award.

A certified nurse-midwife, Diegmann is director of the Nurse Midwifery educational program at Rutgers School of Nursing.

Diegmann practices as a nurse-midwife at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and has developed three midwifery practices in the greater Newark area that primarily serve low-income women. She also works with several local hospitals on initiatives to improve their services to mothers and babies.

The outspoken advocate of normal, noncaesarian births received her award at the annual Lester Z. Lieberman Humanism in Healthcare Awards ceremony hosted recently by the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey.

Diegmann was one of 30 nursing faculty, students and employees from 18 area nursing schools and health care facilities who were honored for providing extraordinary care to patients and their families.
