– Vendor, craft show on tap for May 16

The St. Thomas the Apostle Market Madness Vendor and Craft Show is set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. May 16 at the school, Route 18 south, Old Bridge.

The event will accommodate more than 100 vendors. There will be a 50/50.

– Monroe Chorus to salute military

 

The Monroe Township Chorus will present a concert titled “A Salute to Our Armed Forces” 7 p.m. May 18 at the Monroe Township Senior Center, 12 Halsey Reed Road.

Admission is free of charge. The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be available.

– Church has vendor tables for flea market

The Holy Name Society of Most Holy Redeemer Church will host a flea market on May 16 at 133 Amboy Road, Matawan.

– Walkathon, fair to aid autism services

POAC Autism Services will hold its annual Monroe Walk for a Difference walkathon and resource fair 11 a.m. May 17 at Monroe Township High School, Schoolhouse Road.

The event will feature free rides, entertainment and activities for the whole family. All funds raised will stay in New Jersey to provide free autism education for parents and teachers, free recreational events for children and adults with autism and free training for law enforcement and other first responders throughout the state.

– Rib Fest to raise funds for veterans, charity

The Level Club of South River and Philo Lodge No. 243 will hold its semiannual Rib Fest 1-5 p.m. May 16 on the picnic grounds at the Masonic Temple, 120 Old Bridge Turnpike, South River.

Proceeds will benefit the New Jersey Veterans Home at Menlo Park and the Masonic Service Association (MSA) and Hospital Visitation Program (HSP).

The event will feature all-you-can-eat ribs, hot dogs, hamburgers and salads. There will be music by a DJ. Participants will meet veterans from the facility at Menlo Park.

Cost is $20 for adults, $5 for children under age 12; youngsters under age 4 will be admitted free of charge.

– Naval historian to portray Farragut

Bruce Tucker, a history lecturer and naval historian at the Rutgers University School of Continuing Education, will portray Admiral David Farragut during a discussion at 2 p.m. May 16 at Hageman Farm, 209 S. Middlebush Road, Somerset.

Farragut joined the Navy as a midshipman at the age of 9 in 1810 before fighting in the War of 1812. In April 1862, Flag Officer Farragut commanded the West Gulf Blockading Squadron with his flagship the USS Hartford. After a heavy bombardment, Farragut ran past the Fort Jackson, Fort St. Philip and the Chalmette batteries to take the city and port of New Orleans on April 29, a decisive event in the war. Congress honored him by creating the rank of rear admiral.

On Aug. 5, 1864, Farragut won another great victory in the Battle of Mobile Bay. Mobile was then the Confederacy’s last major port open on the Gulf of Mexico.

– Proceeds from musical benefit animal adoption

Bimah Players Community Theater will donate a quarter of the profits from its new production, “Beastly Encounters,” to Animals Friends for Education and Welfare, an organization that facilitates foster homes and adoptions of homeless and abandoned animals.

The comedy presents dramatizations of works by Anton Chekhov, Rudyard Kipling, Saki and local playwrights.

Performances are 2 and 7 p.m. May 17 and 31, and 7:30 p.m. May 21 and 28 at the Monroe Township Jewish Center, 11 Cornell Ave., Monroe.

– Concert, dinner to aid young boy’s treatment

A Buffet Dinner and Tommy and Friends Band Concert for Zachary Nemeth, a Helmetta 8-year-old who was born with multiple disabilities, is scheduled for 1 p.m. May 17 at the East Brunswick Elks Lodge, 21 Oakmont Ave. Dinner will be served at 2 p.m.

Tommy and Friends will perform outside on the patio by the lake. Guests should bring lawn chairs. There will be seating inside. The menu will include barbecued ribs, grilled chicken, Italian sausages with peppers and onions, corn on the cob, potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw, honey cornbread, rolls, hot peach cobbler with ice cream, banana pudding, brownies and cupcakes.

Cost is $20 for adults, $6 for youngsters ages 4-10; children ages 3 and under will be admitted free of charge.

– Seniors offering trips to Hunterdon Hills

Our Lady of Victories (OLV) Seniors will sponsor two upcoming bus trips to shows at the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse, Hampton. An excursion to see “Country Connections” is planned for June 25; cost is $85. A visit to the “Twist and Shout!” show is set for July 25; cost is $90.

Buses will depart at 10 a.m. from the OLV lower parking lot, Main Street, Sayreville. Return is scheduled for approximately 6 p.m.

Cost for each trip includes the show, lunch, bus transportation, driver gratuity and a snack after the show.
