Back in January, during the cold winter and snowy months, 12 kids from the East Windsor/Hightstown area began their fourth journey of baseball through a very competitive 12U division of USABL.
The team was the East Windsor Blue Demons. They began the season with some good wins, slumped midway through the season, and then rallied for a second-place finish in a Memorial Day tournament.
From then on they played defensively strong and hard. Quality pitching and productive at-bats produced numerous runs, and it all culminated this past Saturday when the Blue Demons defeated a tough Hopewell Valley team for a 5-2 win in the USABL Central West Division Championship game.
There was a larger the normal crowd that was there to cheer on the team; fans included parents, friends and other baseball players and coaches from the local organizations.
Throughout the season, through every game, every kid contributed in many different ways. They hit the ball hard, played tremendous defense, the pitching was on fire and base running was key to many wins as the kids continued to grow and excel throughout the season.
Most importantly they all played as a team. The commitment, collaboration, passion and heart that each kid showed as the season progressed really helped to support one another.
The team members included Christopher Drews, Sean Kane, Aaron Winzinger, Cameron Watkins, Spencer Kenny, Kyle Madden, Justin Sabogal, Michael Elgendy, Joshua Rubinstein, Justin Caylo, Andrew Mazurek, and Jonathan Drews. The coaching staff was David Watkins, Theo Caylo, Ken Sabogal and David Drews.
Two other important contributors to the cause were the parents and the HEWYBL. The parents provided continued support, helping with field prep, assisting in practices, and providing support at the games. The HEWYBL also provided continued support with field usage, field prep and overall excellent support for the Blue Demons players.
