EAST WINDSOR: Dancing the night away for autism awareness

By Amy Batista, Special Writer
EAST WINDSOR — Community members put on their dancing shoes to help raise money and awareness for families affected by autism.
The Hightstown Elks Lodge 1955 hosted the third annual East Windsor Autism Awareness Dance-A-Thon and Raffle last Saturday to benefit Talking About Curing Autism (TACA).
“It was a fantastic event that raised $1,500,” Melody Benbow, of TACA, said. “We look forward to raising more next year.”
The money raised will go to local families who have applied for scholarships.
“TACA provides support and resources to families affected by autism,” Ms. Benbow said. “Autism can cost a family thousands and thousands of dollars each year. Harvard researchers estimate that the added costs of autism-related healthcare and education average more than $17,000 per child per year in the United States.”
TACA also provides monthly educational meetings as well as eight support groups throughout the state.
“We are a volunteer organization, so with no overhead, all money fundraised stays in New Jersey and goes back to New Jersey families,” she said.
Dance Committee members Jennifer Borg, Stacy Johnson, Jenni Rispoli, Jeanne Atlak, Dawn Rubin and Ms. Benbow organized the event, which included raffles, a 50/50, food, a photo booth, door prizes, dancing and more.
“The inspiration came from Jenn Borg, who wanted to find a way to help those in need and have a good time,” Ms. Benbow said. “She has several friends who have children affected by autism so she chose TACA as the beneficiary.”
The best part of the event was “seeing people have a great time while learning more about autism,” according to Ms. Benbow.
The Elks Lodge and ShopRite sponsored the event. Businesses, individuals and families who could not sponsor or attend the event can still donate to TACA by visiting http://ff.tacanow.org/dance-a-thon.
