WEST WINDSOR — A 55-year-old West Windsor Township man who was walking his dog was injured and his dog was killed when they were struck by a motorist who had fallen asleep behind the wheel Monday morning, according to the West Windsor Township Police Department.
The driver of the car, 35-year-old Hilary D. Spearman of Ewing Township, was charged with assault by auto and other motor vehicle offenses, police said. Mr. Spearman was traveling south on Clarksville Road, on his way home from work, when the 7:23 a.m. accident occurred.
Mr. Spearman apparently fell asleep and did not wake up until his car left the roadway and was driving on the sidewalk, police said. That’s when the car struck Chun Yu as he was walking his dog on Clarksville Road, across from West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South.
There were no serious injuries to Mr. Yu, who was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton for observation, but his dog was pronounced dead at the animal hospital, according to police
