AT THE PRESERVE: Aug. 6


Here are the events for August at the Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve in Solebury Township:
Butterflies: More than 50 species of beautiful butterflies can be seen at the preserve.
Learn about the lifestyles of some of the common and uncommon species that make their home here and what makes this such a special place for butterflies. The indoor presentation will be followed by an outdoor hunt to see how many butterflies can be found.
This program will take place Saturday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon at the preserve. The program fee for members is $8 and $10 for others.

Dragonfly I.D. workshop: Learn about the world of dragonflies from one of the masters in the field.
Dr. Mike May will talk about the basics of what members of the Odonata family are and their life cycle and behavior and give an inside glimpse into his research.
The program includes a presentation indoors and a journey outside to search for adults and larvae. Binoculars are helpful, but not required.
Dr. May grew up in Florida and began collecting insects at a young age. His interest in dragonflies peaked in graduate school at the University of Florida where he earned his doctorate.
He is co-author of two books, “Damselflies of North America” and “A Manual of the Dragonflies of North America” and author and co-author of more than 60 scientific papers. He also is editor of “The International Journal of Odonatology” and is involved in the Xerces Society’s Migratory Dragonfly Project (www.migratorydragonflypartnership.org).
This program will take place Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the preserve. The fee for members is $15; $20 for others. Call to register by Aug. 13.
Hawks in Autumn: An ID workshop: Seeing a raptor in flight brings excitement to every birder, but putting a name to that raptor often can be problematic.
Perched raptors can be even more difficult to ID. This presentation will discuss all of Pennsylvania’s and New Jersey’s expected fall hawks and eagles, emphasizing the most difficult ID challenges, using images by photographers.
Pete Bacinski is a naturalist, photographer and field trip guide who has been a leader in the field of ornithology for many decades. He has written for numerous local, state and national publications and has won the World Series of Birding Competition three times.
This program will take place Saturday, Aug. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the preserve. The fee for members is $20; $25 for others. Call to register by Aug. 6.
Perennial garden design with native plants: Learn the basics of perennial garden design from a professional.
Develop a garden plan that fits site conditions and helps attract birds, butterflies and bees. Discuss ideas, ask questions and get suggestions. A materials list will be given to registered participants prior to the start of the series.
This program will take place two Saturdays, Aug. 22 and 29, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the preserve. The fee for members is $65; $75 for others. Call to register by Aug. 18.
National S’more Day celebration: Celebrate National S’more Day by making them around the fire.
Bring the family out for a night around the campfire to share stories and make s’mores. The program takes place at the Pavilion and will take place Friday, Aug. 7, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the preserve. The fee for members is $5; $8 for others. Call to register by Aug. 5.
Weed Patrol: Learn to identify native and non-native plants, the importance of biodiversity and how to remove and dispose of invasive species properly.
These efforts will help to protect the preserve’s native plant collections. Groups, individuals and families are welcome.
This program will take place Saturday, Aug. 8, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the preserve. Call to register.
