MILLSTONE — A pair of young women from Millstone Township have each earned their Girl Scout Gold Award.
Kiran Sinha and Jenna Beth Wincek were honored by the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore on June 3 at the Woodlake Country Club, Lakewood, during an event sponsored by the New Jersey Education Association.
“Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award designation is truly a remarkable achievement and these young women exemplify leadership in all its forms,” said Susan H. Mc- Clure, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore. “Each young woman saw a need in her community and around the world and took action. This extraordinary dedication, perseverance and leadership is making the world a better place.”
Kiran completed a Gold Award project called “Down Stream – Think Globally Act Locally.” Her project included a stream cleanup which she organized with the Millstone Environmental Commission, according to a press release from the Girl Scouts..
The main point of the project was to raise awareness of the amount of trash that ends up in streams and rivers and how the trash affects marine life and beaches.
Along with the stream cleanup, which is now an annual event in Millstone Township, Kiran created brochures and posters to raise awareness and to get more people involved. The main target was the whole community, including young children.
Kiran said she believes it is important to teach good recycling habits at a young age so that children will continue to recycle throughout their lives.
Jenna Beth completed a Gold Award project called “Math Play Everyday.” Her project helped families support their children’s math skills by using board games and everyday math activities.
Jenna Beth hosted Halloween-themed math events at local elementary schools called “Halloboo Math.” Pupils and their parents trick or treated through Halloweenthemed math games.
She wanted to make sure the children saw math not only as educational, but fun as well. She created educational brochures to give to the families to encourage them to practice math every day in fun and exciting ways. Jenna Beth also collected board games and Halloween costumes to donate to the Homefront Organization, according to the press release.
