A construction worker suffered serious cuts to his face and head Tuesday morning after he fell into an elevator shaft at the AvalonBay Communities construction site at 253 Witherspoon St., according to the Princeton Police Department.
The incident, which was reported at 10:42 a.m., occurred at the former site of the University Medical Center of Princeton. The hospital has relocated to Plainsboro Township.
Manuel Otero, 51, of Newark, reportedly slipped from a scaffold and fell about 12 feet into the elevator shaft at the construction site, police said. Mr. Otero, who works for ENN Construction Co. of Passaic, climbed out of the shaft with the help of other workers before emergency personnel arrived.
Mr. Otero was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, by the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad. The Princeton Police Department and the Princeton Fire Department also responded to the call.
