HOPEWELL: Hopewell’s Shvets sets a new standard for youthful success at Cryan tournament

In the biggest tennis tournament in the Middle States Region, residents of Hopewell Township came up big.
The James Cryan Memorial Tennis Tournament at Mercer County Park features over 360 entries, and Hopewell Valley produced two champions and three finalists.
Rising sophomore Brianna Shvets, who has already made her mark as a Colonial Valley Conference standout at Hopewell Valley Central High School, won her first Cryan title by defeating Vanessa Petrini, 7-6, 7-6, in the Women’s Open final. Shvets became the youngest Cryan Open champion in the history of the storied tournament, and she did so by defeating Petrini, a former No. 1 player for Rutgers
Christina Contrafatto and Sarah Ehrenberg made a strong run to the Women’s A Doubles Final, before losing 6-3 6-4. Contrafatto is a former All-American at The College of New Jersey, while Ehrenberg is a member of the University of Delaware Club Team.
Contrafatto then teamed with Mike Ehrenberg to win the Mixed A Doubles Championship in a tight 6-3, 3-6 11-9. victory.
Other players that participated in the tournament were former Hun Stars Chris and Katie Seitz and HoVal standouts, Marc Friedland, Matt Begley, Alex Ochalski, Kenny Zheng, and Andreas Vermeulen.
