PRINCETON: Perfect Raiders repeat as MAPL champs

The Hun School football team narrowly missed out on running the table last year.
This year the Raiders made sure they made it through the season without a blemish on their record on the way to a Mid-Atlantic Prep League title.
Hun capped off a perfect 8-0 season with a 62-0 win at Mercersburg last Sunday. The Raiders went 5-0 in MAPL play, outscoring the opposition, 210-31, in its five league games.
“It is a great time to be a part of it,” senior captain Kyle Horihan said. “That was the goal last year, to go undefeated, but we didn’t expect Poly Prep to be as good as they were. We were 13-6 at halftime and if played like first half in the second half we could have won the game but we didn’t close the deal.”
This year there would be no slip ups for the Raiders. They beat Wyoming Seminary, Poly Prep and Canada Prep in their three games before the MAPL season began and just took off from there.
“When we were healthy we really got rolling,” Horihan said. “We had a lot of injuries this year. I was sick one week and had to fight through it. We had other injuries.”
A two-year captain at Hun, Horihan has helped the program go 15-1 over the last two seasons. He’s seen some players come and go but the one constant has been winning.
“I was a captain last year but it wasn’t really my team, it was more like Chris Sharp’s team,” Horihan said. “This year felt like I have been here. In have more experience and am more of a veteran. With prep school football we bring in guys after we lose guys.
“It is special to be on a team where everyone gets it and is striving for a common goal. We have the people to do it with guys like Jaelin Alburg, who is going to Yale. He’s super fast. And the big guys up front, Jordan McGriff and Fred Hansard and even Chris Fake, who is more of a lacrosse player. I owe it to them what this team is. We are built in the trenches. That’s where you win games.”
In the win over Mercersburg, quarterback Simon Vadas completed 13 of his 16 passes for 301 yards and five touchdowns. Luke Apuzzi and Christopher Renna each caught a pair of touchdown passes. Imamu Mayfield ran for 117 yards and a touchdown and also caught a touchdown pass.
