Salkin’s Jewel Case announces closing

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — A family business that has operated in Freehold Township for 40 years will be closing its doors.

David Salkin, who owns Salkin’s Jewel Case in the South Freehold Shopping Center, Route 9, with his brother, Eric, has announced that a “Going Out of Business Sale” is underway.

Salkin’s Jewel Case began in 1975 with owners Sylvia and Joseph Salkin. Their sons, Eric and David, took it over in 1989. The store has been in the South Freehold Shopping Center since 1980.

David Salkin said the shopping center has been awaiting renovation for several years and its deterioration led him and his brother to make the decision to close.

“It was a difficult decision,” Salkin said. “We have so many customers who we really love dealing with, but business has slowed the last couple of years. We have been waiting for this shopping center to redevelop, but it has just taken much too long.”

Salkin, who has served on the Township Committee in Freehold Township for more than 20 years, is the published author of 11 novels and said writing will become his full-time vocation.

“It has been my dream to write professionally full-time. This is my opportunity to launch my writing career. The Team series has been doing very well and Post Hill Press has asked for a fourth novel in the series. They are pursuing film possibilities as well, so it’s an exciting time for me,” he said.

Eric Salkin, who is an accomplished saxophone player, said that he will also pursue other possibilities after a break for some travel.

“We will miss our friends and customers, but it was the right decision. Time for the next chapter,” he said.

Salkin’s Jewel Case is open Monday through Saturday. Everything will be liquidated.
