HILLSBOROUGH: Woodfern School hosts 26 veterans on Nov. 11

Woodfern Elementary School celebrated Veterans Day on Nov. 11 with an assembly honoring 26 veterans, all relatives or close family friends of students who attend the school.
The theme of the assembly was “We Remember.” Students, staff, veterans and guests all wore handmade red poppies to honor all veterans, not only those in attendance.
The celebration included the posting of the colors by Girl Scout Troop 60143, a greeting by Hillsborough’s Mayor Doug Tomson, an introduction of the veterans by the students, the singing of patriotic songs, and the playing of reveille and taps by retired Hillsborough High School teacher Barbara Jo Kruczeck.
The assembly presented more than 250 gifts to Rod Hirsch, the founder of Operation Shoebox NJ, a volunteer organization that sends packages to troops overseas. A check for $100 to help with the cost of postage was donated as well.
After the assembly, veterans visited classrooms and talked to students about their varied experiences in the armed forces. Students also had a chance to explore two military vehicles brought to the school by soldiers from the Army National Guard in Somerset County.
