EAST BRUNSWICK – In a move to ensure a safe learning environment, the East Brunswick Board of Education voted to increase security at all of its district schools.

“I think that given the world we live in currently, there is always an opportunity to enhance what we already do very well,” Superintendent of Schools Victor Valeski said during the Nov. 19 board meeting.

Board members voted in favor of a resolution that will add one school security officer at all 11 of the district’s schools.

“This is a significant commitment on the part of the board to improve security in all of our school buildings,” said Brad Cohen, president of the school board.

“Let it be known that school safety is one of our primary areas,” Board Member Kevin McEvoy added.

McEvoy followed up his comments by asking Valeski if there would be an increase in security for visitors going into school buildings.

Valeski responded “That would be something for another time.”

The funds for the adding these security officers had not been previously allocated in the district’s 2015-16 budget.

The resolution was passed unanimously.

During the 2014-15 school year, East Brunswick Public Schools had 8,147 students enrolled.
