Little Silver Garden Club honors veterans; decorates for the holidays

On Nov. 11, the Little Silver Garden Club participated in the Borough of Little Silver’s Veterans’ Day ceremony by placing an arrangement at the Blue Star Memorial Marker in Memorial Park, Little Silver. The Blue Star Memorial is a nationwide program begun at the close of World War II to honor all service men and women of the past and the present. New Jersey currently has 35 markers; nationwide there are more than 2,300.

The Garden Club will also be decorating the window boxes at the Little Silver train station for the holidays and making desktop arrangements of greens for distribution to borough offices. The residents of the Meridian care facility in Shrewsbury will also be assisted in making small designs in holiday colors for their rooms. Volunteering at Meridian is one of the club’s monthly service activities and is carried out from September through May.

In the new year, the club’s regular meeting on Jan. 14 will feature Diane Allen, a speaker from Deep Cut Gardens in Middletown. Participants will begin seedlings in anticipation of spring planting. Meetings begin at 9:30 a.m. and are held at the Women’s Club (Church Street and Rumson Road) in Little Silver. Visitors are welcome.
