WEST WINDSOR — Two people were killed and a third person was seriously injured when the car in which they were riding left the road and struck a tree on South Mill Road Sunday afternoon, according to the West Windsor Township Police Department.
The driver, Timothy R. Ignas, 74, and the rear seat passenger, Nicoleta M. Oliver, 65, both of Henderson, Nevada, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred at 1:36 p.m., police said.
Mr. Ignas was ejected from the car and Ms. Oliver was partially ejected from the car, police said. Mr. Ignas was wearing a seatbelt, but Ms. Oliver was not wearing one.
Mr. Ignas’ wife, Lorraine M. Ignas, 73, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was wearing a seatbelt. Ms. Ignas, who also lives in Henderson, Nevada, was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton.
Mr. Ignas was driving north on South Mill Road, near the intersection of New Edinburg Road, when the accident occurred, police said. He failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The car continued to travel straight and struck the curb on the opposite side.
The car jumped the curb and struck a tree on the driver’s side, police said. It bounced off that tree and continued to travel, glancing off a second tree before coming to rest.
The accident is being investigated by Patrolman N. Larocca of the West Windsor Police Department and by the Mercer County Prosecustor’s Office’s Fatal Collision Response Unit. Any witnesses are asked to call Patrolman Larocca at 609-799-1222.
