Students help
hospital with
math event
SAYREVILLE — Students at the Wilson School recently held a Math-A-Thon and raised $1,860 in donations for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.
The event took place during January and was coordinated by Amy Haspel, a math teacher at the school. Some 133 students participated.
One fourth-grade class alone raised $936. The students who raised the most on their own were fourth-grader Brendan Earls ($256), third-grader Jason Low ($255) and first-grader Sean McIntosh ($250).
"We are very proud of our students," Haspel said. "This event gave them practice with their math skills and an opportunity to help children who are in need."
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was founded by the late entertainer, Danny Thomas. The hospital is an internationally recognized biomedical research center dedicated to finding cures for catastrophic diseases of childhood.
The money contributed from the school’s fund-raiser will help cover the costs for children who do not have medical insurance. St. Jude’s Hospital does not ask families without insurance to pay for their medical bills.
"Our students were very eager to help children that are less fortunate than themselves," Haspel said.
