Fair celebrates 58 years

Ocean County Fair planners are putting the final touches on this year’s weeklong event held at Robert J. Miller Airpark, Route 530, Berkeley Township,. The fair runs today through Sunday.

The Ocean County Fair is celebrating its 58th year. The fair moved to the airpark more than 20 years ago. It was originally held at the Ocean County Park in Lakewood until it outgrew the site. An average of 50,000 people visit the fair each year, according to a press release from the county.

"Along with preserving Ocean County’s agricultural heritage, the fair also gives the county an opportunity to highlight services and programs throughout the event," said Freeholder John C. Bartlett, who serves as liaison to the Department of Parks and Recreation. "Ocean County is well represented at the fair every year."

This year the Ocean County tent will house Public Information, Recycling, Senior Services, Consumer Affairs, Tourism, the Ocean County Utilities Authority, the Master Composter Pro-gram, the Ocean County Health Depart-ment and the Ocean County Vocational Technical Schools.

In addition, the Ocean County Depart-ment of Parks and Recreation has a tent at the fair. Other county agencies on the fairgrounds include Ocean County College, the Ocean County Library system and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department.

Fair contests open to the public include the baby crawling contest, toddler races and the kiddie tractor pull.

The fair will feature the work of people who have entered the craft show, creative art, family history, floral design, foods, honey and beeswax, horticulture and photography events.
