Heather Ciribassi of Jackson received the Henry L. Sundberg Jr. Award at the Western New England College Academic Honors Convocation held in May at the school’s Springfield, Mass., campus. Named for Professor Henry Sundberg — who retired in 1991 after 32 years in the mechanical engineering department — the annual award is given to students who were chosen to represent the college in the Region I, American Society of Mechanical Engineers student paper competition.

In her paper titled "Endwall Loss Reduction on the Leading Edge of a Turbine Airfoil," Ciribassi presented a method of increasing the performance of a jet engine.

A member of the Sigma Beta Tau Honor Society, Ciribassi was also president of the student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

While at college, she was named to the dean’s list for multiple semesters and was a first-year seminar assistant, as well as a supplemental instructor. She has accepted a position as a design engineer with DRS Power Technology Inc. in Fitchburg, Mass.
