HILLSBOROUGH: Conor Hampton receives music award

Flutist Conor Hampton was presented with the Gary T. Smith Outstanding Musicianship Award at the Auten Road Intermediate School 6th grade honors and jazz band concert on May 20.
Conor is a student musician in the ARIS instrumental program. He is a member of both the Raider Band and the Honors Band. He also plays piano for the Jazz Band and the Advanced Orchestra.
Conor was chosen to receive the award based not only on his enthusiasm and excitement for music but also because of his eagerness to help other students. His classmates feel comfortable asking him for assistance as he is always kind, patient, and willing to help whenever asked.
The Gary T. Smith Award was named after retired Hillsborough band director Gary T. Smith. Mr. Smith taught instrumental music in the district for 43 years. To honor his dedication to instrumental education in the district, an award is presented annually to a 6th grade honors band student that embodies his dedication to music, humble attitude, cooperative spirit, and overall outstanding musicianship.
“Conor approaches all of his music much the same way Gary (Smith) does — with enthusiasm and excitement,” said Beth Nichols, Conor’s ARIS flute teacher. “And, like Gary, Conor is open-minded about trying new things.”
Other ARIS students recognized as award nominees at the May 20 concert were Michael Guarnieri (trumpet), Shivant Krishnan (tenor sax and drum set) and Peter Cavanaugh (trombone).
