Salvation Army in need of food donations

The Red Bank Salvation Army Food Pantry is running low and the community’s help is needed.

Individuals, community groups, schools and businesses are being asked to get involved and help feed their neighbors.

Currently, the Red Bank Salvation Army provides food, primarily through donations, for approximately 20 families per week and more than 600 families throughout the holiday season. Additionally, a monthly soup kitchen serves members of the community. Serving clients from 23 towns is made possible with the help of generous donations from members of the community. The food pantry, which is available on Wednesdays by appointment, always welcomes volunteers to help stock shelves and distribute orders.

Items needed include: peanut butter and jelly, canned beef stew or chili, macaroni and cheese, canned tuna, rice, pasta, canned fruits and vegetables, canned soups or dry packages of soup mix, beans of all types, pasta sauces, boxes of cereal, oatmeal, cans of juice or juice boxes, crackers, microwavable meals, shelf-stable milk, pancake mix, syrup, bread and muffin mixes, granola bars, fruit cups, sugar, honey, cake and pudding mixes, cooking oil, dressings, gravy, boxes of mashed potatoes, condiments and drink mixes.

There are many ways to help, which include individual donations; running a neighborhood food drive; workplace giving; enlisting local Scout troops and groups interested in a community service project.

The Salvation Army also suggests setting up a Battle of the Classrooms. The class that wins by collecting the most food, can celebrate with a treat, homework pass or other incentive.

Donations can be brought to: The Salvation Army at 180 Newman Springs Rd., Red Bank, Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m.
